How to Make a Perfect Fitting Boyfriend Tee + tutorial

foggydress_boyfriend tee I don’t know why I keep calling this a “boyfriend tee” when really it’s my husband’s, but you get what I mean: a loose, slouchy-fitting top that may or may not have formerly belonged  to a boyfriend/husband/male.

Some people can just throw on a big tee and it somehow looks flawless. But I usually have to make a few adjustments here, sew a little there, before it actually works on me.

If you have a sewing machine handy, you can fix those wide shoulders and those longs sleeves to make them more feminine and flattering. More photos & a tutorial after the jump!

Supplies:

  • a boyfriend tee
  • another shirt similar to your bf tee (ex: if it’s a t-shirt, use one of your fitted t-shirts. My bf tee has a collar so I used one of my fitted shirts that has a collar.)
  • the usual scissors, pins, and a sewing machine

Directions:

  1. using a similar tee of your own, pin your bf tee at the end of the shoulder’s length on your fitted blouse (see picture, I’m sure I’m confusing some of you!). Now…  turn the shirt inside out!
  2. See the space between your pin and the original length of the shoulder (the seam where the shoulder meets the sleeve–see picture above)? You’re going to…
  3. …pinch that area so the pin and seam are touching.
  4. pin them together
  5. Once you’ve pinned the center, taper off both sides of the sleeve along the seam line down to the armpit.
  6. Sew along the pinned line!
  7. Be sure to sew inside the seam. I would sew a few inches, then flip the tee outside in to check out the new seam line & make sure it looks ok
  8. See the extra tapered off section? After you’ve tried it on to make sure you’ve sen the sleeves correctly, go ahead and cut/serge it off.

Now, remember those big, long sleeves? Well, roll them up at least twice, and sew them at three points (see picture below) to secure the fold:

foggydress_boyfriend teeLook at you! It still has some of it’s boy-ish flair, but it fit’s quite flattering on you. There you have it–a perfect fitting boyfriend tee.

PS–in these pictures it looks like the left sleeve is an awful bit shorter than the right side, but I assure you it’s the same length. When I put on my purse, it scrunched up the sleeve a little bit!

hugs,     hanalei.
