Heya, this is Brooke from Giddy in the City again here with another food post for you!
This time Hanalei asked me to do a smoothie post. And I sure do love a good smoothie. So many fruit combos to be made! (And veggies too!) But what I love even mooore than a smoothie is…a milkshake.
Totally not as healthy though, which is why today I bring you a smoothie disguised as a milkshake — full of nothing but nutritious goodness, yet as chocolatey and sweet tasting as a good old-fashioned ice cream shake.
Here are the deets:
The main components of this smoothie are a frozen banana, ice, a tiiiiny bit of honey, some almond milk, a dash of vanilla extract, salt and some cocoa powder. You blend ’em all up in a food processor (or blender), and there ya have it.
The best part about this smoothie is it’s versatility. If you want to add even more nutrition with some veggies, you can add in spinach, zucchini, squash or avocado without it affecting the taste of the smoothie one bit. You can also switch up the extract to give it a different flavor. I’ve added orange, coconut, almond and mint extracts to this basic chocolate smoothie/milkshake. Or you can leave out the cocoa and have a straight-up banana flavor. It’s a fool-proof recipe, guaranteed. See the full recipe after the jump!
Banana Smoothie Shake (2 servings)
-1 Frozen banana (I peel my brownest bananas and stick them in a bag in the freezer, then pull it out when I’m ready for a smoothie)
-5 ice cubes
-1 cup of almond milk
-3 Tablespoons of cocoa powder
-dash of salt (about 1/4 teaspoon)
-1 Tablespoon of honey (or to taste)
-handful of spinach
-1/4 of zucchini or squash
-orange, coconut, mint, or almond extract in place of vanilla
Instructions: Blend the 5 ice cubes in a food processor or blender. Add a dash of the almond milk and blend until fully crushed. Add the frozen banana. Blend until smooth. Add the almond milk, cocoa powder, salt, honey and extract. Blend until smooth. Serve and enjoy!
